Hi shivno,
I'm not associated with homebrew cask, but I'd guess that the reason
they do not host packages themselves is due to the cost of bandwidth.
Unfortunately, although hotlinking allows homebrew cask to avoid
bandwidth costs to themselves, it does not make those costs go away -
it just pushes the cost onto someone else.
FossHub supports Audacity and many other free software projects. They
do not have sponsors, do not distribute adware or bundle-ware, and go
to great lengths to avoid deceptive advertising. Their running costs,
including the considerable cost of bandwidth required to deliver free
software to millions of people, are raised entirely from the low level
advertising on their site.
Hot linking to content on FossHub incurs the same bandwidth costs to
FossHub as any other download, but bypasses their only means of
financial income. Obviously, a business that has expenses and no
income is not sustainable, so as it says at the top of their FAQ,
FossHub prohibit hot linking. (https://www.fosshub.com/faq.html)
If homebrew cask would like to forge some sort or arrangement with
FossHub, they need to contact them directly
(https://www.fosshub.com/contact.html).
Regards
Steve
Post by shivnohi,
i use homebrew cask, which is a nice package installer for mac os.
it tries to get the audacity .dmg from fosshub and they disallow hotlinking,
as it is a script it cant fill out js stuff and fails.
i found out there is a sf project, but it seems abandoned.
could anybody upload the current binaries there so homebrew cask can use it
as download source?
https://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/
thanks! shivno
