[Audacity-devel] Multitrack example of sequencer plug-in

Hi,

For those who want to listen, I've created a multi-track mp3
example of using the Audio Selection Sequencer 2 Nyquist plug-in.
The mp3 file is available at

http://www.shellworld.net/~davidsky/seque1.mp3

There are five tracks:

1. main melody: the default sequence of notes programmed into the
sequencer. I used a 2.5-second Nyquist pluck sound at MIDI pitch 60
(middle C) as the selected audio to generate this melody.

2. Drum: generated using a sound generated by the Bloops (mono)
plug-in I wrote a few years back.

3. Bass sound: offset in time to start halfway into the melody. 5-
second nyquist pluck sound at MIDI pitch 36 (2 octaves below middle
C). Slight flanging applied using a chorus/flanger plug-in I'm
working on.

After attenuating, I used a Nyquist bass boost/attenuate plug-in to
amplify the bass sound.

4. Maracas: Although I didn't have this sound in mind specifically,
this is how they sound like to me (after mixing with the other
tracks). Time offset to start one bar before the middle of the
melody. 0.1-second Nyquist white noise, with fast fade-in and fade-
out applied before sequencing.

5. Light fast randomized sequence: the original melody notes, at
twice melody tempo, repeated during last half of melody. Original
sound: default Nyquist pluck sound (middle C). I made the overall
transposition value 12.05 semitones, so as well as being one octave
higher than the melody, there's also a slight chorus effect when
this track is mixed with the other melodic tracks.

All sound creation, effects and editing was done in Audacity 1.2.4
using Nyquist, except for the built-in Audacity Amplify effect.

All mixing was done using headphones, so I don't know what this
sounds like on speakers.

Sound very nice. I just listened to it using a 45W RMS 5.1 sound system in parallel to an old Sanyo
Sterep (Deck/FM/CD) set.

I like the melody. I'd make the bass-hit a bit longer, it seems to end abruptely, unexpectedly.

I was about to say that! Reverb tails and all.

Facinating what can be done with a 'few' lines of code and a bit of
imagination.

I quite heartily agree! Writing Nyquist has become one of my creative
outlets, thanks very much to Audacity and the ability of a simple
text editor to create the code!

Hi David - I've enjoyed playing around with some of your Nyquist scripts
too. If you get a chance would you consider uploading a zip of the
Audacity project file(s) somewhere, along with explanatory notes so
others could replicate/tweak/change your oeuvre?

Hi Alec,

Yes I can create and upload a zip file of the project and tracks. This
would take some time for various reasons.

What's an oeuvre? thesaurus.com and dictionary.com weren't particularly
helpful, thesaurus words seemed to indicate "bulk, collection"... my
translation "entirety".

I hope this is just another beginning! (Oh, did you mean "ouvre" I think,
"opening" in French?)

*chuckle*

No problem at all. If / when you get a chance.

Thanks Alec,

The other definitions I had found had not included "work of art" or
similar defs. Thanks for the answers.com suggestion and link!

Thanks for your feedback too Martyn.

Actually, are you and Buanzo talking about making each bass note longer,
or just the final one?

Creating this example is the first time I've used the project capability
of Audacity - I'm glad I did so so I can easily make this
change/addition. :-)

each note, but something special for the final note would be quite ok, too, like a sustain...

I could feel that from your emails! I'm happy, too, of the results. That's why I'm taking time to
provide my feedback. Nice, NICE job!

Hi Buanzo,

Thanks for your feedback - and a longer final bass note _would_ make for a
nicer ending.

The sequencer sequences audio selections by stretching or
shrinking (like using the change speed effect in audacity), it will be
simple to add another track just for a final long bass note.
