There is movement on PulseAudio support from the PortAudio side, as per
the message below. I haven't tried it yet (not having a PulseAudio
machine to hand), but I'm sure feedback from anyone able to build
Audacity with the version listed below would be welcome.

The Mixer toolbar in Audacity won't work (because the changes for that
are not yet merged into PortAudio) but the rest should do.

Subject: [Portaudio] Portaudio PulseAudio HostAPI

Hello,

For a while there have been on-going development to get PulseAudio
HostAPI integrated to Portaudio. Now it is time to test and review Pull
Request at Assembla (and if there is demand I could produce patched
Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and openSUSE (Arch?) binary package to test
with).

PulseAudio HostAPI solves many ALSA hangs and problems for normal user
that doesn't demand very low latency (Although PulseAudio is not that
bad than it's reputation is). There is probably some corner cases when
PulseAudio HostAPI doesn't work better than ALSA-PulseAudio bridge but
I'll fix them as they appear.

If you are willing to test Pull Request and can compile it by yourself
it's wonderful but you can answer this post even if you can't and tell
if you need Binary packages for particular Distro.

Pull request can be found:

https://app.assembla.com/spaces/portaudio/git/merge_requests/3719213

And source is

https://app.assembla.com/spaces/portaudio-pulseaudio/git/source/PulseAudioHostAPI

Sincerely,
Tuukka
